Research

The AVU Academic Research Centre, which focuses on basic and applied research, the processing of source documentation and a critical evaluation and reinterpretation of Czech fine art from 1945 to the present day, has implemented the following research projects:

Czech Art in the Period of Post-Communist Transformation (1980–2005)

This five-year research project examined key moments in Czech art during the period of transformation from the 1980s to the present day. It placed an emphasis on non-aesthetic and intermedia overlaps. The outputs were regularly documented and edited in online databases and the physical archive of the AVU Research Centre documentation centre.

The AVU Research Centre series
The project focuses on translations of theoretical texts that provide a broader interdisciplinary view of the historical, political and socio-cultural background of the post-Socialist transformation in our region.

2007-2011 / Research project

Czech Art of the 1980s and 1990s – Reflections and Documentation

This five-year research project gathered together and processed textual and visual documentation relating to Czech art of the 1980s and 90s. The outputs were regularly documented and edited in online databases and the physical archive of the AVU Research Centre documentation centre. The periodical The Notebook for Art, Theory and Related Zones was published as part of the project, which since 2009 has been peer-reviewed.

AVU Research Centre’s on-line video archive database
In May 2010 the AVU Research Centre’s on-line video-archive database was launched as part of the i-datum contemporary art database.

Bibliobase
An on-line database of bibliographical data that offers well-arranged information about the history of Czech post-war visual culture.

Modern and Post-Modern Art after 1945

This six-year research project involved the processing of source material and a critical evaluation and reinterpretation of the history of Czech fine art after the Second World War, with an emphasis on a reflection of the politico-historical context and with consideration for the parallel discourse of the art world. The outputs of the research and interpretative work were regularly documented and edited and a new online database entitled Bibliobase created along with the archive of the Academic Research Centre. The research outputs were gradually introduced on a national and international level. The AVU Research Centre was involved in several international activities (NEW MOMENT) and research projects (vektor, Gravity), by means of which it is attempting to place Czech art within a global context.
